Computational Modeler
Geofirma Engineering Ltd. is looking for a computational modeler to join our team working on groundwater flow, contaminant transport, and geomechanics modelling projects. You would be joining a team of experienced professionals who conduct leading-edge modelling for radioactive waste management, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and other significant subsurface activities. A deep knowledge of the scientific and mathematical basis of fluid flow and transport modelling is required, and the position requires substantial data analysis skills.
Experience developing numerical models is essential, and experience with the modeling codes HydroGeoSphere, TOUGH3, and/or FLAC3D would be an asset. The ideal candidate will have a graduate degree from a recognized Canadian engineering or earth science university program, with an established track record in modelling subsurface flow processes such as contaminant transport, multiphase flow, chemical processes (e.g., dissolution), and hydromechanical coupling. The candidate should ideally have the potential to obtain a P.Eng. or P.Geo. license in Ontario. Experience with software development is also of interest.
Duties for the position include:
- Work as part of an interdisciplinary project team to achieve project objectives, particularly in the context of underground storage (nuclear waste, CCS, natural gas, energy storage and mine hydrogeology).
- Contribute to the evaluation, interpretation and integration of a variety of datasets including geology, borehole geophysical data, hydraulic testing, groundwater / rock porewater chemistry and pressure data, into a cohesive conceptual model of a field site.
- Assist in setup, execution, analysis, visualization and documentation of computational models. Assist with associated software development, as required.
- Assist, if interested, in deep borehole hydrogeological, geomechanical, geochemical and geophysical testing, possibly involving time away from Ottawa.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, hydrogeologists, and environmental scientists, to develop integrated and innovative solutions to complex hydrogeological challenges.
- Contribute to the preparation of client-facing technical reports, high-quality visualizations and presentations to communicate complex scientific and engineering concepts and model results and provide actionable information for clients, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Stay informed of emerging trends and technologies in your area of expertise and apply them to project work.
The successful candidate will be offered a permanent position, with the opportunity to assume increasing autonomy, responsibility and equity participation in Geofirma Engineering Ltd. Annual salary will be in accordance with PEO/APGO salary scales, between $65,000 and $85,000 depending on experience. Company benefits include medical/dental and Group RRSP. The position is based in Ottawa, Ontario.
